Preacher Palin

I admit, it bothers me that Palin thinks that the fighting in Iraq is a "task from God." I was also intrigued by her exhortation to pray for the gas pipeline. They mock Obama for suggesting that you inflate your tires, but prayer is part of an energy policy?

Keeping Us Sane

The Daily Show was on tonight, but the video isn't on their website yet. But This Samantha Bee piece from yesterday was good also.

The Daily Show does a much better job of cutting through the BS than just about any news organization. Those delegates are a piece of work, huh?

[UPDATE] Here are some more, from the best fucking news team on television!

Rabble Rouser

Nice people, those Republicans.
"There's some speculation that there was, uh, union organizing, or, uh, organizing the community to take advantage of welfare programs, or whatever."
Why not just call him uppity and save us the 6 hours of speeches each day? Oh, nevermind.

The Republican Racket

The Republicans have figured out a pretty effective and cynical style of running for office. It's simple and easy, and goes like this:
  1. Lie. About yourself, your opponent, and objective reality.
  2. In the unlikely event that the media points out the lies, call them biased.
  3. Repeat.
It's depressingly predictable.

And that's about all I can say about the speeches last night.

Loren On Rudy's Speech

Just now:
"Oh my god John he's being such a douchebag don't come in here!"
She was right.

Open Mic Night at the RNC

No, I don't mean just because they're letting anyone speak (Romney and Giuliani?) I'm talking about Republican hacks Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy caught on live mics expressing their real feelings about Sarah Palin (via TPM).

This is a truely amazing video. It's not really that surprising to people who pay attention, but it is stark to see the contrast between what they really think and the party line they regurgitate on TV. Pass this along!

(Transcript below the fold)
Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we'll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We'll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she's the right woman for the job Up next, one man who's already convinced and he'll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman.
(cut away)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys -- this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it's not gonna work. And --

PN: It's over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she's never looked comfortable about this --

MM: They're all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullshit about narratives --

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Lieberman's Great Speech

Wow. Just wow. I think that Joe Lieberman is a phony and a charlatan, but he just delivered one hell of a keynote at the Republican convention. Here is the video:

He hit all the right notes; Um, ladies and gentlemen, and did it with his folksy charm and trademark cadence. That was a dagger to Obama's heart.

(In case you couldn't tell, I was being sarcastic!)

Respect.

I caught a small amount of the RNC tonight, but I saw enough. I saw Fred Thompson call Obama a baby killer. I saw Joe Lieberman cuddle up to his right-wing overlords. I saw one of the 36 black GOP delegates. And I saw a markedly different attitude towards military service than the GOP showed four years ago.

Everywhere I looked I saw signs with "Service," "Country First," and slogans honoring POWs and veterans. But I'll never forget that this was the party that distributed band-aids with purple hearts on them to mock Sen. John Kerry's service just four short years ago. Suddenly the party that swiftboated on behalf of a draft dodger is running on a platform of service to one's country? Spare me.

I do find it worth noting that the Democratic party doesn't denigrate service when it's politically convenient. Sen. Obama showed us how to disagree strongly while being respectful. Sen. McCain and his party lack the grace to have such respect, and make no mistake; that disrespect it not aimed just at Democrats, it's aimed at the Democratic process of our country.

End of my rant.
